The Space Shuttle is launched as a rocket. It circles around the earth as a  space ship and lands like a glider. At launch, the delta-winged orbiter is  hitched to the External Tank and two strapped-on solid-rocket boosters.  Only the orbiter and its main engines go into Earth orbit. The other parts are just for lift off and drop away shortly after launch. ......

NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) had four Space Shuttles: Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor.  The shuttle Columbia was destroyed while reentering earth's atmosphare over Texas on February 1,2003.
